TREATMENT OPTIONS AT PTSMC

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy utilizes elastic bands to restrict blood flow of a particular limb. This “tourniquet” creates an environment in the muscles that is similar to that of a high intensity workout. You get the same results training at 20-40% of 1RM as you would training at 70-85% of 1RM.

Concussion Therapy

Your physical therapist will often work directly with your doctor to create a customized program that addresses your individual needs. This includes manual treatment, exercises, evaluation and education to help restore balance and coordination, treat dizziness, treat recurring headaches, and help athletes get back to the game.

Dry Needling

Dry Needling involves the insertion of a sterile monofilament needle into a muscle to decrease spasm and trigger point activity. As a result, the muscles contract and release, which helps resolve pain and stiffness, improve muscle function and flexibility and promote healing.

Fall Prevention & Balance Training

It’s important to train your balance skills, just like training your muscles for strength. Physical therapy can help you to improve your balance and reduce your risk of falling.

Fractures

Your physical therapist will aim to improve your functional mobility, reduce pain and swelling, strengthen muscles and decrease scar tissue, especially if surgery was required due to the extent of your fracture.

Graston Technique/ Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)  is a skilled myofascial intervention used for soft-tissue treatment. The Graston Technique © is a patented form of IASTM that uses stainless steel tools to perform a deeper, more effective version of soft tissue mobilization than you would receive with typical manual therapy.

LSVT BIG for Parkinson's Disease

Our LSVT BIG certified clinicians currently treat Stage I and II Parkinson’s disease. Exercise intervention with LSVT BIG will have the most significant positive impact on quality of life when initiated closer to the time of diagnosis. Research suggests that people with Parkinson’s disease should not wait until function is impaired or balance problems occur.

Neck/ Back Pain

Physical therapy for back and neck pain focuses on the structures that support the spine and its joints including muscles, tendons, and ligaments to help reduce pain, restore mobility, strengthen muscles and get you back to your normal activities without the use of pain medication or surgery.

Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Injuries

Physical Therapy is often the best first option for individuals suffering from muscle and joint pain, whether due to functional limitations or injuries from sports, activities or every day life. PTSMC offers world-class orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation services for people of all ages, needs and abilities.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people around the world. While OA cannot be reversed, the symptoms can be managed and alleviated with the help of physical therapy as a part of a comprehensive strategy that includes manual therapy and a customized exercise program.

Pelvic Floor & Women's Health

Pelvic floor therapy treats any issues of the pelvic floor, including those cause by pregnancy and experienced post-partum. Common issues include urinary incontinence, pain, diastasis recti, constipation, and more.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Physical therapists are experts at helping you recovery from surgery. We help with joint mobility, muscle control, and regaining function.

Sports & Performance Therapy

The following clinics are able to treat and prevent sports-related injuries in youth and adults, including common runners’ injuries.

The following clinics have advanced training and experience in sport-specific injuries.

Sprains/Strains

Sprains and strains are common injuries that can be caused by a number of things, such as falls, twists, or general overuse. A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, whereas a strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

TMD is a common condition that limits the natural function of the jaw, such as opening the mouth and chewing, and can cause pain and other problems. Fortunately, it can be treated with specialized physical therapy.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is the inflammation or irritation of a tendon; the thick fibrous cords which attach your muscles to your bone. If you have pain or tenderness just outside of a joint, you may be dealing with tendinitis.

Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf Therapy

Working towards a successful, consistent golf swing can be a complicated and frustrating process, especially if your swing is causing pain. There are several parts of the body that need to work together with the right motion and at the right time. Sessions with our TPI certified golf therapists can help discover the areas that may be creating problems in this process, from backswing through to impact.

Transitional Rehabilitation

Whether overcoming a major injury or dealing with a recurring problem, Physical Therapy is a vital part of getting you back to your daily life. Still, PT benefits do not always cover a full return to recreational activities or advancement beyond your original level of function. Transitional Rehabilitation bridges the gap between the point of completing your physical therapy program and a full return to activity.

Vertigo & Vestibular

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a form of physical therapy that is intended to alleviate primary and secondary issues caused by vestibular disorders. Programs are excercise-based and designed to reduce the symptoms caused by vestibular disorders.

Workers' Compensation Injuries

Physical therapy can help treat injuries sustained during work to get the worker back to work and their daily life.

Comprehensive Injury Assessment

If you have had a recent injury, or you’re experiencing muscle or joint pain, an injury assessment is the best first step towards recovery and living pain-free. Our expert clinicians will perform a comprehensive physical evaluation at your initial visit and provide advice on the next steps you should take towards your recovery. Unlike many other clinics, we dedicate a full hour to this initial evaluation in order to learn your history, talk about your problem, explore potential causes, perform movement assessments and identify problem areas with as much information as possible before recommending a physical therapy program. We are here to help you with a customized PT treatment program only if it’s necessary.

Patient Education

Patient education is a vital part of your physical therapy experience because we believe you should understand your diagnosis, know why we’ve built your treatment program a certain way, and be able to set attainable goals. Along with the evaluation process, we will educate you on the causes of your pain and explain what types of self-care techniques and home exercises will be important to maximize your rehabilitation and keep you moving pain free once your PT is completed.

Trigger Point Dry Needling

Here, PTSMC Groton Partner & Director Steven DeCastro provides a Dry Needling session for a new patient experiencing neck and shoulder pain.
