Steven de Castro, PT, DPT

Steven de Castro, PT, DPT

Education: Steven received a Bachelor's degree in Health Studies cum laude from Boston University in 2001, and a Master's degree in Physical Therapy in 2003.  He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree.  Steven joined PTSMC in June 2007, and became a partner in Groton in 2009.

Clinical Interests: Steven's clinical interests focus on the evaluation and treatment of performers and athletes.  Having been the exclusive physical therapist for the Mystic Ballet Company since 2010, he has enjoyed the opportunity to work with the highest level of dancer in the region.  As a sports fan, relationships with Fitch and Stonington High Schools provide enjoyment in realizing a return to play and a connection with the local sports scene.  He completed his Cyriax Orthopedic Evaluation and Treatment certification in 2006.  He has attended various continuing education courses based in Maitland, McConnell, andMcKenzie techniques. He also completed training in the Graston Technique; used for the management of soft tissue injuries.

Fun Facts: When not spending time with his wife and children, Steven is an avid sports fan, and enjoys running and playing soccer.

Rick Berggren, PTA, ATC/L

Rick Berggren, PTA, ATC/L

Education:  Rick graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1976 with degrees in Athletic Training and Physical Education. He also holds a Physical Therapy Assistant degree from Springfield Technical Community College.   Throughout his career, Rick has served as an athletic trainer for New London, Montville, Waterford, Ledyard, and Fitch High Schools.   He also serves as the medical education instructor for the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) coaching certification program.  In May 2007 Rick joined PTSMC when PTSMC acquired the Centers for Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation.  He has been in clinical practice for thirty four years, and is the athletic trainer for Fitch and Ledyard High Schools. 

Clinical Interests:  In 2011, he completed training in the Graston Technique; used for the management of soft tissue injuries.  Rick was also trained by the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) in Myokinematic Restoration in October 2011.  

 
Bethany Forshaw, ATC/L Fitch & Stonington High Schools

Bethany Forshaw, ATC/L Fitch & Stonington High Schools

Education:  Bethany graduated from New England College with two Bachelor’s degrees in Health Science and Kinesiology, with a minor in Psychology.  She later pursued her Master of Science in Athletic Training at Bridgewater State University.  Bethany joined PTSMC Groton in August 2013, and works as the Athletic Trainer for both Fitch and Stonington High Schools. 


Clinical Interests:  She has her NATABOC Certification, and special training in Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA).  Some of Bethany’s clinical interests include Sports Medicine and Functional Movement Assessments.  

Fun Facts:  When she is not on the field helping athletes, Bethany enjoys softball and running.  She is also a HUGE Boston sports fan, especially the Boston Bruins.  Her favorite food is mac n’ cheese.

 
Jason Smutnick, PT, MSPT

Jason Smutnick, PT, MSPT

Education: Jason graduated from the University of Connecticut with three degrees; a Bachelor’s degree in Diagnostic Genetic Sciences in 2002, a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy in 2007, and a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy in 2008. Additionally in July 2009, Jason had an article published in Physiotherapy. The topic was on hip and knee flexion of lead and trail limbs during ascent of a step of different heights by normal adults. He joined PTSMC in August 2008 in our Watertown clinic, and was promoted to Director of our Stafford office in February 2012.

Clinical Interests: In 2011, he completed training in the Graston Technique; used for the management of soft tissue injuries. Jason specializes in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy and is also trained in biomechanical foot assessment and orthotic management.
